As global air traffic returns to pre-Covid levels, the need to decarbonize our industry has become increasingly important. Air France is reinforcing its efforts to reduce the climate impact of its operations with a commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions per passenger-kilometer by 30% by 2030 (compared to 2019).
To achieve this, we are accelerating the introduction of new-generation, more energy-efficient aircraft, which consume up to 25% less fuel than the planes they replace. We are investing one billion euros per year into this transition. Additionally, we are developing eco-piloting techniques, connecting trains and planes, and gradually incorporating the use of Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). You can learn more about SAF in the attached video.
SAF, derived from non-fossil resources such as used oils, is a key factor in the aviation industry’s decarbonization. However, its production remains too limited, and its cost is 3 to 4 times higher than kerosene. For the past two years, French regulations have required aviation fuel suppliers to include a portion of SAF in deliveries to French airports. Starting January 1, 2025, European regulations will increase this requirement to 2% for all flights departing from Europe.
These regulations ensure that SAF produced and consumed in the European Union reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65% over its lifecycle compared to fossil kerosene. SAF must also meet strict environmental criteria, specifically guaranteeing that its production does not compete with human or animal food supplies and does not lead to deforestation. Air France applies these same criteria outside Europe, relying on certification from recognized international organizations.
Currently, ticket prices for flights departing from France include a „SAF“ contribution. Starting January 1, 2025, this contribution will apply to all flights, and its amount will evolve as SAF is gradually incorporated on our flights. For roundtrip flights, the amount of the contribution will range from 2 to 10 euros in the Economy cabin and 3 to 30 euros in the Business cabin, depending on the distance traveled.
You can also voluntarily contribute to the purchase of additional SAF when booking your ticket or during check-in. Every euro contributed is fully invested in SAF. Flying Blue members can use Miles to contribute to SAF purchases and earn additional XP.
Thanks to your contributions and those of our corporate clients, we used 36,618 tons of SAF in 2023, reducing over 100,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.
To ensure we can keep flying tomorrow, let’s rethink how we travel today.
