BESPOKE LIGHTING FOR NEW MUNICH MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPORTS ARENA
Dornbirn, Austria – A dynamic building façade, a striking asymmetrical shape and space for up to 11,500 spectators – with the SAP Garden, Munich’s Olympic Park is not only gaining a new multifunctional arena, but also expanding the sporting diversity of the historic site. From late summer 2024, SAP Garden will offer two German champion teams and the general public a new sporting home spanning a total floor space of over 70,000 m². EHC Red Bull München, who boast several German ice hockey league titles, will play all their home games at the Olympic Park.
The sports venue’s unique shape was designed by Danish architects 3XN, while the landscape architects from Latz + Partner ensured that the new building blends harmoniously into the park landscape. The SAP Garden’s appearance is shaped by its organic design and green roof, in keeping with the spirit of the 1972 „democratic green“ Olympic Games to remain true to the original vision for the Olympic Park.
The client, Red Bull Stadion GmbH, brought in the lighting experts from the Zumtobel Group brands Thorn and Zumtobel to ensure that the SAP Garden is optimally staged from day one and offers intuitive visitor guidance. Based on a lighting design by Licht Kunst Licht AG, a lighting solution was developed that is perfectly matched to the customer’s brand staging.
With their lighting solution, Thorn and Zumtobel are responsible for staging all areas outside the ‘Bowl’ event hall itself. For Zumtobel, this includes the fan stores and brand shops, team cabins and wellness zones, the office and conference rooms, as well as the catering area. Numerous lighting tools from the Zumtobel portfolio are utilised here. Thorn’s portfolio provides the street and walkway lighting for the site as well as the luminaires on the roof terrace.
In addition to the main rink, SAP Garden offers three smaller, year-round ice rinks for training and recreational sports. The building also includes fan stores and brand shops, team cabins and wellness zones for sportspeople as well as offices and conference rooms.
The official opening took place on 27 September 2024 with a game between EHC Red Bull München and the Buffalo Sabres from the NHL.
