Figure Announces Second-Generation Humanoid

Artificial intelligence robotics company Figure announced Figure 02, its second-generation humanoid designed to perform tasks in commercial applications and, eventually, households.

According to Figure, the design and engineering teams employed a ground-up software and hardware redesign to create Figure 02. This new model, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 154 pounds, can travel at about 2.6 miles per hour and features a range of technologies, such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, electronics, batteries, actuators, and sensors.

Powered by a 2.25-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a five-hour runtime, Figure 02 uses speakers and microphones connected to AI models to engage in speech-to-speech interactions with humans. The humanoid’s vision language model also allows for quick visual reasoning with the help of six RGB cameras.

The robot features internal wiring and offers three times the AI inference and computation compared to the first-generation humanoid, enabling the fully autonomous execution of real-world AI tasks. Additionally, its fourth-generation hands provide 16 degrees of freedom and strength that match a human’s.

Other features include shoulder joints with 50 newton meters of torque and a 148-degree range of motion, 150 newton meters of torque and 135 degrees of range at the knees, and 150 newton meters of torque and 195 degrees of range at the hip.

Figure collaborated with BMW Group to test the new humanoid at the automaker’s factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. While working on the factory floor, Figure 02 placed sheet metal parts in fixtures, which were later assembled into the chassis.

BMW added that the companies are evaluating how the robots could spare humans from performing ergonomically awkward tasks during automobile production.
