Electric Mobility | Industrial Safety
The British company Fire Cloak has announced that its fire blankets, designed for emergencies involving lithium-ion batteries, will be used behind the scenes at the Formula E championship during the 2026 season. The company published this information on its official website. The announcement states that its solution will be available to teams across the grid as part of the safety equipment for working with electric racing cars.
Formula E is the world’s premier electric formula racing series and has long been a technological pioneer in the field of electromobility. Alongside the development of powertrains, it also devotes considerable attention to safety when handling high-voltage battery systems. The risk of so-called ‘thermal runaway’ – the uncontrolled thermal decomposition of lithium-ion batteries – is one of the scenarios for which manufacturers and operators of electric vehicles are preparing intensively.
Certification and technical standards
According to Fire Cloak, its blankets are designed to help limit the spread of flames and extreme heat during fires involving electric vehicle battery systems. The manufacturer also states that its product is among the first fire blankets to be certified to the DIN SPEC 91489:2024-11 technical specification, which sets out requirements for equipment designed to contain fires in electric vehicles.

Wide-ranging applications in industrial practice
The manufacturer also states that its solution is used in other areas where lithium-ion batteries pose a significant operational risk. These include logistics centres, car repair workshops, ports, shipping, public infrastructure and industrial facilities using battery systems.
The growing number of electric vehicles and battery storage facilities means that fire safety is becoming an increasingly important aspect of industrial practice. Alongside early detection systems, specialised fire-fighting equipment and safety containers, technologies designed to manage emergencies involving lithium-ion batteries are also being developed.
Where these solutions are used:
- Logistics centres and industrial facilities
- Car repair workshops and public infrastructure
- Ports and shipping
